Photography Style Guide

Picking an outfit can be stressful! Here are a couple helpful hints, tips, and tricks to make sure you feel confident during and after your photography session. Remember to keep it simple, be yourself, and have fun!

Photography sessions are an event and therefore you should plan and dress for the occasion. Be sure to dress appropriately for the location, the weather, and the style of photos desired.

Things that work well in photographs:

·     When you feel your best, you look your best. Confidence in yourself and in your outfit are key to making magic memories to be captured by the camera.

·     Neutral tones: white, cream, tan, brown, khaki, blue, black, grey (think colors found in nature)

·     Muted Tones of pink, purple, blue, green, burnt orange, rust

·     Outfits that compliment each other and the location but do not match. Such as different shades of the same colors and not choosing one specific color for everyone to wear (I can help with this one.)

·     Wear layers and bring layers: Wear a belt over your flowy dress to show your figure, wear a cardigan over a tank top, wear a jacket over a shirt. Bring a special blanket your family always uses, bring your favorite cardigan or jacket that you wouldn't mind being photographed with.

·     Feminine: Flowy dresses, skirts, accessories, belts, bracelets, floral crowns, heels, floppy hats

·     Masculine: Fitted slacks, logo-less shirts, solid color shoes

Things to avoid for photographs:

·     Avoid neon colors, bright colors (yellow, orange, bright green, hot pink): they can be distracting from the face and unflattering to certain skin tones.

·     Avoid wearing shirts with logos and screen printed images on them.

·     Avoid vertical striped clothing as they can be unflattering to certain body shapes and do not photograph well.

·     Avoid wearing a hair tie on your wrist the day of your photo session as it can leave an imprint on the skin and be forgotten to be taken off.

·     Avoid baggy jeans, and any clothes that are too big or too small.

·     Avoid too much makeup on the skin as it can sometimes appear to be orange. Scheduling a pro-make up artist is a great touch but make sure they have done makeup for photographs before, so they match your natural skin tones.

·     Avoid matching each other for example both wearing white shirts and black bottoms. You should mix it up with different shades of the same color (pale blue with navy blue, black with light grey, white with khaki, etc.)

Other Pro Tips:

·     Be on time (or even a little early) so you can get situated and not feel rushed. That way you have time to fix the tucked in shirt, re-apply lipstick, make minor adjustments to hair, makeup, and outfits.

·     Come prepared: bring extra shoes if we will be walking. Bring extra jackets and blankets you wouldn’t mind be photographed with.

·     Be confident and bring a positive attitude! Bring laughter, love, kindness, gentleness, and gratitude.

·     Be yourself! Don’t be afraid to be happy with your kids enjoying the outdoors, interact with each other, interact with nature. Be present in the moment and enjoy the experience.
